Sporting Fun & Games Offered to Youngsters in North Solihull

(27th July 2007)

Children in North Solihull are being offered the chance to enjoy two weeks of sporting fun and games at Smith's Wood Sports College this summer.  The two-week long event, being run by Positive Futures, gives 8-12 year olds the chance to get active and involved in the community.

Football, basketball, netball, table tennis, cricket and many other team sports are on offer between 10am and 3pm every day between 6-17 August, for only £2.00 per day.

Julie Taylor, who works for Solihull Council heading up the project which is sponsored by the North Solihull Partnership, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for the younger generation in Solihull to interact and get involved in their local community, while building friendships with each other.

"The summer holidays can feel like a long time for both kids and parents and this is great way to get them active and take some of the strain from family life, whilst putting something back into the area."

Positive Futures has been running in North Solihull since 2002, and in order to continue its programmes of providing sporting activities to young people in the area, the project is now part-funded by North Solihull Partnership, the organisation that is delivering the £1.8bn, 15 year investment programme into Smith's Wood, Chelmsley Wood, Kingshurst and Fordbridge.

Janet Bradbury, chief executive of North Solihull Partnership, said: "We are delighted to support such a worthwhile community initiative, especially since the participating children who are currently between 8-12 years old will be adults by the time the 15 year Regenerating North Solihull project comes to an end.

"The energy, personal drive and new skills gained from these sports projects enable participants to step out into their communities as real role models.  As well as being good fun, we hope these activity weeks will help install similar skills to the younger children of North Solihull."

The North Solihull Partnership is made up of Solihull Council, Bellway Homes, regeneration specialists Inpartnership and Registered Social Landlord Whitefriars Housing Group. Together they are driving the £1.8 billion regeneration programme that will see 8,000 new homes built and 12,500 more improved, as well as the replacement of every primary school, the construction of five new village centres, and significant infrastructure improvements.

The activities on offer at Smith's Wood Sports College are registered with Ofsted. All staff are qualified and experienced in working with children and will ensure a safe and fun environment for all involved.
